Teachers and students have a very common, yet special, relationship. Seeing one another most days of the week sparks an interest in both parties, causing either to feel admiration for the other. Sometimes, under wrongly timed circumstances, there might be an immense dislike instead. Generally, though, a teacher who is well-regarded by students helps in their overall performance in school.

The primary matter during the first few days of school is the teacher’s decision of how to behave in the classroom. Being too lenient might cause the students to take her subject for granted. On the other hand, strict teachers are detested by most pupils and sometimes the latter go to great lengths to make fun of the former, making the relationship strained and therefore, making the learning environment unsuitable for both sides. So, a teacher’s actions should be just right because it determines a child’s enthusiasm to learn.

What is the proper way to encourage students in order for them to discover what it is they are passionate about and then eventually pursue this path? First, it is necessary to observe each child’s ability. They learn at varying degrees so this process takes a while to complete. Low achievers usually credit their success to luck while high achievers believe it is a product of hard work combined with their skill. So, the next step is to emphasize the importance of effort. Failure happens when we don’t give our hundred percent; it is not due to lack of ability alone.

Second, teachers must genuinely care about a student and his performance. If he feels that his teacher sincerely wants him to succeed, a child will be more motivated to do well, hoping to impress his teacher. In addition to that, he will also learn more in the process. Third, perfect scores must not be emphasized since this might only encourage cheating just to get the grade they are after. Furthermore, a student will just study for the sake of passing, as opposed to studying for the purpose of gaining new knowledge about a particular subject matter.

Fourth, praise should be favored over criticism. A teacher may need to disapprove sometimes, but the delivery must not be excessive. Constructive feedback is best, coupled with a firm but friendly tone. Fifth, it is a good idea to give the high achievers some challenging items to answer. If students feel they have even a slight chance at solving a problem, they usually willingly go for it. If it is something which disagrees with something they have already found to be true, they won’t stop until their curiosity is put to rest as to which is really the correct element.

Teacher-student relationships are actually no different from a mother-son one. The younger usually looks up to the older one for inspiration and the latter, in turn, nourishes the former with the attention and praise that he so desperately needs. If given the right teacher, a youngster could feel the confidence to conquer the world, and maybe, he might just do that.
